What's in the file, and what isn't
In the file
- Name, address and phone, as owners gave them to the city
- A cuisine label the owner picked
- Letter grade and the date it was issued
- A location, used for our maps
Not in the file, so not here
- Ratings or reviews
- Hours, menus or prices
- Whether a place is open today
- Descriptions or photos
- Any opinion about the food
A grade tells you how a place did on its last graded inspection. A spotless kitchen can serve a dull dinner, and the other way around. See how the city scores restaurants.
Questions
- How many restaurants are there in New York City?
- The city's file dated October 30, 2026 has 27,295 places to eat with at least one inspection, plus 3,976 that have applied for a permit and haven't been inspected. That includes coffee shops, bakeries, stands and cafeterias, because the city inspects those too.
- What does an NYC restaurant health grade mean?
- It comes from a city inspection, scored on a scale where lower is better: 0 to 13 is an A, 14 to 27 a B, 28 or more a C. It covers things like food temperature, cleaning and pests. It doesn't measure taste.
- How many NYC restaurants have an A?
- 21,605 of 27,295, or 79%. Another 1,774 show a B, 523 a C, and 3,393 have no letter right now.
- Do you rate or rank restaurants?
- No. There are no ratings, reviews or picks here, and lists are alphabetical.
- Is this a city website?
- No. It republishes the city's open data, and the city hasn't reviewed it. Some pages also carry a box marked Sponsored, which is an ad and sits apart from the lists.
